Neuroscience

REM does not own every dream.

Dreams can occur in REM and non-REM sleep. They are often most vivid during REM.

The idea

An interesting experience and a proven explanation for it are different things.

An example

A vivid dream can inspire a story or personal reflection. That does not establish a scientific account of why it occurred or prove that it predicts anything. Keep personal meaning separate from an evidence claim.

Try it

Describe a dream in one sentence, then describe your interpretation in a second sentence labeled “My interpretation.”

More context

Dreams are often most vivid during REM, but can also occur during non-REM sleep. Scientists still investigate why we dream. Sleep science · function remains an open research question
