An example
Imagine a tiny colored patch that becomes more or less visible as it is expanded or contracted. That is a simplified way to picture the pigment-display mechanism; it leaves out the additional contribution of reflective structures.
Try it
Compare “the dye changed color” with “the amount of pigment displayed changed.” What different mechanism does each sentence suggest?
More context
