The idea
A technique includes both what the artist places on the canvas and how the work is intended to be viewed.
An example
Compare a close view of separate colored marks with a view taken farther away. Use that comparison to ask how individual marks contribute to the larger image. It is a viewing exercise, not a guarantee that every pair of colors behaves identically.
Try it
Look at a reproduction at two sizes. Describe one detail visible close up and one relationship clearer from farther away.
