A neurotransmitter’s effect depends on its receptor. The chemical alone does not determine the response.

An explanation about a messenger is incomplete if it ignores what receives the message.
An example
An everyday analogy is one instruction read by people with different roles: the response depends partly on the receiver. This is only an analogy; it does not describe receptor biology in detail or predict a person’s mood.
Try it
When you hear a claim about one brain chemical, ask what receptor, location, and evidence the explanation includes.
