Psychology

When you review is part of what you learn.

In a study of over 1,350 people, retention depended on both the time between reviews and the delay before testing.

The idea

The interval before review and the interval before testing are separate parts of a study design.

An example

A learner preparing for tomorrow and one hoping to remember months later have different retention goals. The study makes that distinction worth considering; it does not hand us a universal calendar.

Try it

Write when you need to use the material, then schedule a review and check what you can recall at that review.

More context

Cepeda and colleagues studied fact learning with more than 1,350 participants. Retention depended on both the gap before review and the delay before the final test. Research finding · Cepeda et al., 2008
