Language & ideas

Equanimity

Steadiness of mind, especially when circumstances are difficult.

The idea

You can feel the sting and still choose a measured reply. Try: “Which part needs to change?”

An example

A client questions your work. A steady response could be: “Tell me which part concerns you so we can look at it together.” This is an example of the word in action, not a guarantee that a conversation will go well.

Try it

Write one sentence that addresses a disagreement without attacking the other person or pretending to agree.

More context

Definition paraphrased. Original example: “She answered the difficult question with equanimity.”
