Liminal

Situated at a threshold or in an intermediate, transitional state.

The idea

You can leave an old role before the new one has a name. A transition can be real before it looks impressive.

An example

Someone has left a job but has not begun the next one. “Liminal” names that in-between period; it does not tell us whether the transition is exciting, difficult, or both.

Try it

Complete this sentence: “I am between ___ and ___. The next concrete step is ___.”

More context

Definition paraphrased. Original example: “The weeks between leaving one job and starting another felt liminal.”
